Hey there!
In issue # 3, I mentioned why I’m in an “Always Be Beta” state of continuous learning and experimentation. In fact, this newsletter is one of the ways of how I learn in public.
Around 3 years ago, I attended an International Skills Forum that was organized by the Asian Development Bank. One of the statistics that stuck with me was this:
65% of elementary children are preparing for jobs that do not exist yet (Source)
Because of the pandemic, a lot of our presumptions about our career paths have shifted. A lot of jobs are already replaced by technology. New jobs have also popped up because of technology.
Take this newsletter for instance. Before the internet, I’d have to copy excerpts and photocopy for each subscriber and have them posted by snail mail. You’d probably get this a week or months after I sent it out and the envelope will be thick.
That’s crazy.
One of my friends, Nikki, calls a person doing different types of jobs and side projects at the same time as someone who does a “squidball strategy.” 🍡 Before, it will be considered disloyalty to your employer if you get a side gig. Now, it’s becoming the norm.
If you want to stay loyal to a company, that company should be YOU.
Here’s the banner of my newsletter page in Notion to remind me of why I’m doing what I do especially when stuff gets too hard:
When we talk about our careers, it’s more of a mind shift than a physical shift.
Here are this week’s articles:
🕸 The Multi-Path Career | James Beshara | 10 minutes
This is a great primer on creating a multi-path career for yourself.
✍️ The Day You Became A Better Writer | Scott Adams | 2 minutes
It sounds so easy, but it’s actually not.
🧾 How And Why You Should Give Yourself An ‘A’ | John Turner | 4 minutes
I’m currently listening to the audiobook version of Art of Possibility and this part has changed my perception of how I relate with other people.
🍬 No Brown M&M's! David Lee Roth and the Power of Checklists | Tim Ferriss | 2 minutes
It’s fascinating to hear about the weird requests of prominent people and now *some* makes sense.
📚 Get free books and even get paid, just for honest reviews
Speaking of side gigs, let me know if you’ve tried this out!
Thank you for making this far 😊 Creating this newsletter takes up a lot of time and I’d appreciate it if you show your support by replying, sharing, or buying me a coffee.
‘til next week!

P.S. I guested on my friend’s podcast show! We talked about our favorite survivor stories and I talked about a Japanese soldier who didn’t believe that the war was over. Check it out on Spotify!
